He came to us in a very poor state. He used to live alone, chained up, guarding a house where drugs were stored. He's a painful example of what people can do to a dog. He was deliberately trained to guard a property, kept isolated and chained, and what he went through there took away his chance at a normal life in a family. Hermano struggles a lot with resource guarding, and he can be very selective about people, especially inside his kennel. We believe a placement would carry too much risk for him, so Hermano will most likely stay with us for the rest of his life. We do everything we can to make sure that life is as safe and calm as possible for him. His past likely included an early separation or loss, and a lack of proper bonding with a mother or a human. That has left deep marks, marks that still show up today in moments of tension, resentment, and irritability. At the same time, he's an introverted dog who seeks closeness and attention from the one person he chooses to trust. At his core, Hermano is a dog who wants to feel secure. When something stresses him or he can't make sense of a situation, his nervous tension and a chronic underlying anxiety can make him reactive. Boredom or frustration can bring out repetitive, compulsive behaviors. He's easily distracted and finds it hard to focus. Hermano carries the marks of what humans did to him, and that's exactly what took away his chance at a family. His home will likely be the shelter, for good.
